Stephens Memorial Hospital Offers Self-Management Education for Diabetics

Stephens Memorial Hospital has announced the latest schedule for its Diabetes Self-Management Education program.

The program requires physician referral to the Diabetes Education Program.  The cost of the class is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance.

Training is offered in either a full day class or four 2-hour sessions over several weeks.  Session 3 for 2008 will be May 3rd from 9 am - 3:30 pm in the Harper Conference Center.  Session 4 will be June 3, 5, 10, and 12th from 10 am - 12:00 noon in the Diabetes Conference Room.  Session 5 will be August 16th from 9 am - 3:30 pm in the Harper Conference Center.  Session 6 will be October 13, 15, 20, and 22 from 10 am - 12:00 noon in the Diabetes Conference Room.  Session 7 will be held November 1st from 9 am - 3:30 pm in the Harper Conference Center.

Doreen Taylor, RN, BSN, CDE, the Diabetes Nurse Educator at SMH will lead the sessions.  Topics will include:  What is Diabetes?, Exercise, Complications, Medications, Nutrition, and Coping/Depression.

Individuals wishing to attend the full day sessions will need to attend a nutrition management class prior to attending.  Schedule for these classes can be obtained from Pat Watson, Dietician at SMH by calling 743-1562x 420.

Stephens Memorial Hospital (SMH) and its Diabetes Self-Management Education Program were awarded the prestigious American Diabetes Associate (ADA) Education Recognition Certificate for a quality diabetes self-management education program in January.   The program is staffed by two Certified Diabetes Educators, and offers valuable insight into the prevention and self-management of this chronic disease.  Classes are held on a regular basis in either a one-day or multi-class format.  The program is also certified Ambulatory Diabetes Education and Follow-Up Program site through the Maine Diabetes Prevention and Control Program
