SMH Safe Sitter® Instructor Attends Conference

Carol Welsh, RN, Perinatal Outreach Coordinator for The Family Birthplace at Stephens Memorial Hospital recently attended an all day workshop in Manchester, New Hampshire, for Safe Sitter ® instructors.  The workshop was lead by Janet Raker, RN, Education Director for Safe Sitter®, and was a fun day of interacting with other Safe Sitter® instructors and learning from the best.

The group played games and shared stories while learning ways to make the Safe Sitter® classes memorable for students.

Stephens Memorial Hospital has been offering Safe Sitter® classes since 2006 with 103 local area students successfully completing the course.  The next class offering will be held on June 25 &27, 2008.  For further information or to sign up please call 207-743-1562 X380.

Safe Sitter® was founded in 1980 by Indianapolis pediatrician, Dr. Patricia A. Keener, after a nurse's 18-month-old choked to death while under the care of an adult sitter.  In reflecting on her colleague's loss, Dr. Keener recognized the vulnerability of young children when cared for by unprepared child care providers.

Safe Sitter® has attracted the attention of the media over the years.  Dr. Keener has made numerous appearances on shows such as  The Today Show, Good Morning America,  CBS This Morning, and the John Walsh Show.  Safe Sitter® articles are routinely featured in an array of periodicals including The New York Times, Newsweek, Good Housekeeping, and Sesame Street Magazine Parent's Guide, as well as various medical journals.
