SMH Birthplace gets 5 Star Rating!

Photo Caption:  Second Time mom, Jill Whitechurch-Dixon, shown here with baby Kealaokamahinahoku had wonderful things to say of her experience at The Family Birthplace.  With Whitechurch-Dixon are Kelly Hatch, RN who was her nurse during her stay, and Nurse Director Alison Newton, RN.  Unable to attend photo was attending physician Carolyn Costanzi, MD.

Stephens Memorial Hospital Senior Vice President of Clinical Services, M. Patricia Cook, RN, MBA, EdD, was pleased to announce that The Family Birthplace at Stephens Memorial Hospital is celebrating receiving seven 5-star ratings, the highest possible rating, on a national patient satisfaction survey, a milestone that stretches not just one quarter, but, over the past six months.

The staff nurses, physicians, and the nurse director of The Family Birthplace have worked very hard to achieve these scores.  Patients suggestions have been listened to very carefully and changes implemented to make the birthing experience even better for new moms.

Staff have been striving to be "Baby Friendly" which means that they encourage breastfeeding; all of the Birthplace RNs also recently completed their Breastfeeding Counselor Certification so they are all resources for moms.  They encourage family and friend visitation to new moms, offer helpful newly redesigned literature, and take every effort to make parents as comfortable as possible, which includes new menus and room service amenities, as well as nursery visits when procedures are necessary for their new baby.  Other steps taken were the hiring of a Perinatal Outreach Educator, Carol Welsh, RN, who sees all parents prior to delivery at SMH and Shannon Nassa, RN who is a Certified Lactation Consultant. Additional classes offered include Preparing for Birth, Breastfeeding and Sibling Classes.

Alison Newton RN, OBS Nurse Director states, "Stephens Memorial employs a highly skilled and compassionate team of registered nurses and physicians.  Although we function well autonomously, it is our group effort that provides our patients with superior care.  I realize people have a choice where they will receive their healthcare and want to sincerely thank our moms and families for sharing their miracle of birth with us."
