Additional Parking for SMH
Patients, Visitors, and Employees
Memorial Hospital President, Timothy A. Churchill,
announces a plan to improve the availability of parking
for patients, visitors and employees was brought before
the Norway Planning Board on Thursday, October 9 by Mark
G. Johnson, ASLA, of SMRT in Portland, Maine and Les
Gammon, Director of Plant Operations, Stephens Memorial
Hospital. The current plan is being submitted to the
Town of Norway and the State (DEP) as an amendment to
the standing permits.
The purpose of the
presentation to the Town of Norway was to provide
an update of a plan submitted in the summer of 2002 as
part of the expansion of the Emergency Department.
Since the expansion, volumes in the ED have risen
significantly, creating a need for additional parking
for patients, visitors and employees. Timothy A.
Churchill stated, "We plan to begin Phase I this month
which will provide some additional parking in November.
Phase II of the project, which includes paving, curbing,
and planting of shrubs and trees, will be completed in
the spring." It is expected that at least 90 additional
spaces will become available at the conclusion of the

well as circulation for vehicles and pedestrians.

provisions for treatment and cleaning of storm water

To make way for additional parking, the
Pike, Estes, and Thomas buildings will be removed within
the next few weeks. Departments currently housed in the
Pike and Estes buildings are relocating to other
locations on and off the existing campus.
Effective October 20th, patients who wish to pay their
hospital bills in person will be directed to an office
at the hospital adjacent to the Emergency
The Main Street frontage will provide
a more cohesive campus and enhance the appearance to the
southern gateway of Main Street.
