SMH Patients & Staff Enjoy the Art of David Stengelsen

Stephens Memorial Hospital is currently hosting an exhibit of paintings by David Stengelsen.  The works will be on view during November and December.

Dav id Stengelsen has been a painter most of his seventy four years.  As a high school boy and later in college, he drew and painted constantly.  In 1955-56, David had a tour in the Army, where he played flute and saxophone in various Army bands.

He graduated from Los Angeles city and state colleges with a major in art and a minor in music.  After exhibiting for years in Los Angeles and San Francisco, David and his wife, Ann, moved to Norway Maine in 1988.

He has had exhibits at Stephens Memorial Hospital over the last few years, as well as, a well received exhibit at the Deertrees Theatre's Backstage Gallery in 2007, and the Norway Library in 2008.

Most of his paintings over the last 20 years are quite large - from 48 x 60 to 72 x 96 inches.  All are in oil. Those featured in the Norway Library exhibit were among the smaller paintings in his author series and were completed while living in Spain.

Among his influences he lists German expressionist painters Ernst Kirshner and Oscar Kokoshka, as well as, American painters Milton Avery, Alex Katz, Fairfield Porter, Philip Guston and Englishman, Lucian Freud.
